When you first move to Abu Dhabi, your phone becomes your most essential tool. Government services, transport, banking, groceries, social life — everything runs through apps here. The UAE is one of the most digitally connected countries in the world, and the app ecosystem reflects that.
Here’s the definitive list of apps that Abu Dhabi expats actually use every day, organised by category. Do you think we’ve missed any? Leave a comment below and we’ll take a look!
Essential Government and ID Apps
1. TAMM
What it does: Abu Dhabi’s central government services app. Think of it as your one-stop shop for everything official — driving licence renewals, parking permits, residency services, business registration, and more. Over 600 services are available through TAMM.
Why you need it: Almost every official interaction with the Abu Dhabi government goes through TAMM. You’ll use it to renew your vehicle registration, pay utility bills, apply for housing permits, and manage your tenancy contracts.

2. ICP (UAE ICA Smart Services)
What it does: Manages your residency and Emirates ID applications with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security.
Why you need it: You’ll use this to check the status of your visa, Emirates ID application, and for travel-related permits.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
3. Al Hosn
What it does: The UAE’s national health app. Originally launched for COVID-19 vaccine records, it now serves as your digital health passport and stores vaccination records, PCR test results, and health declarations.
Why you need it: Your vaccination records (including childhood vaccinations for your kids) can be stored here. Some medical facilities still reference it. Also useful for travel documentation.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
4. UAE Pass
What it does: A unified digital identity that works as your login for all UAE government services. Think of it as the national single sign-on system.
Why you need it: Instead of creating separate accounts for every government platform, UAE Pass lets you authenticate once and access TAMM, ICA, Ministry of Health services, and many more. Set it up early — you’ll need your Emirates ID.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
Tip: Set up UAE Pass as soon as you receive your Emirates ID. It dramatically simplifies every government interaction you’ll have in the UAE. Without it, you’ll be creating new logins for every single government service.
Transport Apps
5. Careem
What it does: The region’s dominant ride-hailing app (owned by Uber). Covers taxis, private cars, bike rentals, and food delivery all in one platform.
Why you need it: Careem is the most reliable ride-hailing option in Abu Dhabi. It has better driver availability than Uber in many parts of the city, and the Careem Pay wallet is useful for seamless payments. Also integrates with ADNOC Bikeshare for bicycle rentals.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android

6. Uber
What it does: You know what Uber does. Works well in Abu Dhabi for standard rides and Uber Black.
Why you need it: Good backup to Careem, especially during surge periods when one app may be cheaper than the other. Essential if you visit Dubai frequently (where Uber has stronger coverage).
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
7. DARBI
What it does: Abu Dhabi’s official taxi-hailing app, operated by the Integrated Transport Centre.
Why you need it: Connects you to metered taxis with no surge pricing. During rain or peak hours when Uber/Careem prices spike, DARBI gives you a reliable, regulated fare. Also useful for airport pickups.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
8. Mawaqif
What it does: Abu Dhabi’s parking payment app. Lets you pay for on-street parking, check zones, and extend your parking time remotely.
Why you need it: If you drive, this is essential. No more running back to feed the meter — extend your parking from your phone. Parking fines in Abu Dhabi are AED 200+, so this app pays for itself immediately.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
Tip: Download both Careem and Uber — compare prices before booking. During normal hours the difference is small, but during peak times or bad weather, one app can be 30-50% cheaper than the other.
Banking and Money Apps
9. Your UAE Bank’s App
Whichever UAE bank you choose (FAB, ADCB, and Emirates NBD are the most common for expats), download their mobile banking app immediately. UAE banking apps are generally excellent — most support instant transfers, bill payments, cheque deposits, and card management. See our guide on opening a bank account in Abu Dhabi for which bank to choose.
📱 FAB Mobile: iOS / Android | ADCB: iOS / Android

10. Wise
What it does: International money transfers at the real exchange rate with low, transparent fees.
Why you need it: Nearly every expat sends money home, and Wise consistently offers the best rates compared to banks and traditional transfer services. The multi-currency account is also useful for holding money in your home currency. See our full guide on sending money home from Abu Dhabi.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
11. Payit (by FAB)
What it does: A digital wallet by First Abu Dhabi Bank. Send money, split bills, pay at shops, and manage a virtual debit card — all without needing a traditional bank account.
Why you need it: Useful for new arrivals who don’t have a bank account yet. Also handy for splitting bills with friends and sending quick payments to people.

Food and Grocery Delivery
12. Talabat
What it does: The dominant food delivery app in the UAE (and across the Middle East). Restaurant delivery, grocery delivery, and convenience items.

Why you need it: Talabat has the widest restaurant selection in Abu Dhabi. During summer months when going outside feels impossible, this becomes a lifeline. The grocery delivery (Talabat Mart) offers 15–20 minute delivery on everyday items.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
13. Noon (Noon Food & Noon Minutes)
What it does: UAE-based e-commerce and delivery platform. Noon Food handles restaurant delivery; Noon Minutes delivers groceries in 15 minutes.
Why you need it: Noon is a strong Talabat competitor — often has different restaurants and frequently runs promotions. Noon’s e-commerce store is also a good Amazon alternative for UAE-based shopping.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
14. Deliveroo
What it does: Food delivery from restaurants, including many premium and independent options not on Talabat.
Why you need it: Deliveroo tends to have a more curated selection of higher-end restaurants. Good for date night at home.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
15. Kibsons
What it does: Fresh produce and grocery delivery, sourced from farms and suppliers. Specialises in fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, and organic options.
Why you need it: If you cook regularly, Kibsons’ quality is noticeably better than supermarket delivery for fresh items. They also stock international specialty products that are hard to find elsewhere. Order at kibsons.com.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
Tip: Abu Dhabi has a slightly different restaurant landscape to Dubai on delivery apps. Check all three (Talabat, Noon Food, Deliveroo) as each has exclusive restaurants. Also watch for “free delivery” promotions — they rotate frequently.
Shopping and Services
16. Amazon.ae
The go-to for online shopping in the UAE. Delivery is fast (same-day or next-day for many items in Abu Dhabi). The product range is smaller than Amazon US/UK but growing rapidly. Amazon Prime UAE costs AED 16/month and includes free delivery, Prime Video, and Prime Gaming.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
17. Dubizzle
What it does: The UAE’s classifieds marketplace — the local Craigslist/Gumtree. Buy and sell used items, find apartments, job listings, and services.
Why you need it: Essential for finding apartments (Dubizzle Property is the most-used rental search platform in the UAE), buying used cars, selling furniture when you leave, and finding deals on everything. See our rental guide for tips on apartment hunting.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android

18. Washmen
What it does: On-demand laundry and dry cleaning pickup and delivery.
Why you need it: Schedule a pickup, they collect your clothes from your door, clean them, and deliver them back. In a climate where you go through clothes quickly, this is a genuine time-saver.

Health and Fitness
19. SEHA (Abu Dhabi Health Services)
What it does: Book appointments at Abu Dhabi public hospitals and clinics, view lab results, and manage your family’s health records.
Why you need it: If you use any SEHA facility (the public healthcare network), this app manages everything. Works for both residents and their dependents.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
20. Your Health Insurance App
Download your specific health insurance provider’s app. It lets you find network hospitals, check your coverage, view your insurance card digitally, and submit claims. Major providers include Daman, Oman Insurance, and Nextcare. See our health insurance guide for more on choosing coverage.
Entertainment and Social
21. Time Out Abu Dhabi
What it does: Events, restaurant reviews, things to do, weekend plans — curated specifically for Abu Dhabi.
Why you need it: The best way to discover what’s happening in the city each week. Especially useful for finding events, new restaurant openings, and seasonal activities. Check at timeoutabudhabi.com.
22. The Entertainer
What it does: Buy-one-get-one-free deals at restaurants, attractions, spas, and hotels across the UAE.
Why you need it: The annual subscription (around AED 445) pays for itself after 3–4 uses. Most Abu Dhabi expats consider it essential. The app covers restaurants, Yas theme parks, hotels, and activities.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
23. VPN App (NordVPN or Similar)
What it does: Encrypts your internet connection and lets you access content that’s geo-restricted in the UAE.
Why you need it: VoIP calling (WhatsApp calls, FaceTime, Skype) is restricted in the UAE without a VPN. You’ll also need one to access your home country’s Netflix library, BBC iPlayer, and other streaming services. See our detailed guide on the best VPN for UAE expats. NordVPN is the most popular choice among UAE expats.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
Tip: Install and set up your VPN before arriving in the UAE. The VPN provider websites themselves can be blocked, making it harder to download and configure once you’re in the country.

Communication
24. WhatsApp
Not optional — WhatsApp is the default communication method in the UAE for everything: friends, work groups, landlords, your building management, your kids’ school, restaurants, and even some government services. If you don’t use WhatsApp, you’ll miss half of what’s happening.
Note: WhatsApp messaging works fine. WhatsApp voice and video calls are technically blocked by UAE telecom providers — you’ll need a VPN to use them, but always stay on the right side of the law.
📱 Download for iOS | Download for Android
25. Botim
What it does: Licensed VoIP calling app that works legally in the UAE without a VPN.
Why you need it: If you want legal, reliable video calling without a VPN, Botim is the standard choice. It costs a monthly subscription (~AED 50 through your telecom provider), but the call quality is consistent. Available through Etisalat and du.
